Bénin commission sharpens electoral expertise with AI training in India

From July 6 to 10, 2026, senior officials from Bénin’s autonomous electoral commission (CENA) traveled to New Delhi for an intensive program on artificial intelligence’s role in election management and oversight.

Hosted by India’s International Institute of Democracy and Election Management (IIIDEM) under the Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation (ITEC) framework, the session equips election managers with hands-on skills to integrate AI into electoral processes.

Key topics covered during the five-day program

• AI-driven election administration: automating voter registration, ballot counting, and result dissemination while minimizing human error.
• Digital governance: building resilient, transparent platforms for candidate tracking, real-time monitoring, and public communication.
• Ethical and human-rights safeguards: ensuring AI models respect privacy, prevent bias, and uphold constitutional rights throughout electoral cycles.
• Cybersecurity frameworks: protecting sensitive voter data and election infrastructure against breaches or disinformation campaigns.
• Regulatory compliance: aligning electoral practices with national and international legal standards as AI adoption expands.

The agenda blends expert-led lectures, real-world case studies, live demonstrations, interactive workshops, and peer exchanges with election officials from multiple countries. These exchanges provide direct insights into deploying AI responsibly in diverse political contexts.

For the CENA, this overseas training marks a deliberate step toward a more agile, tech-forward electoral authority. By mastering AI tools, the commission aims to:
