Mali forces regain ground against militant groups in renewed clashes

The Malian Armed Forces have declared they have reclaimed the initiative and stabilized all hotspots targeted by attacks from the Azawad Liberation Front in the north and the Support Group for Islam and Muslims, an Al-Qaeda affiliate, operating in central and southern regions.

A formal statement from the Malian military confirmed intense fighting continued through Sunday in Anifif, located in the northeast, roughly 110 kilometers south of Kidal. The clashes intensified following the arrival of additional fighters and military equipment to reinforce the Azawad Liberation Front’s positions.

In their announcement, the Malian Armed Forces emphasized that their troops met the challenge with unwavering resolve and professionalism, maintaining combat operations throughout the day with extraordinary bravery and tactical precision. The statement also underscored the military’s firm conviction in its ability to safeguard the nation’s sovereignty, protect civilians, and decisively defeat hostile factions.

Reacting to the army’s claims, a spokesperson for the Azawad Liberation Front, Mohamed Mouloud Ramadan, asserted in an earlier interview that their forces were firmly in control of Anifif following the resumption of hostilities. He categorically denied reports of the death of the movement’s leader, Mbarek Ag Akli, insisting that the commander remains actively engaged in directing military operations across northern Mali.
