Two prominent political figures from the former Groupe de Concertation des Acteurs Politiques (GCAP) in Niger, Me Bidi Valentin and Bombay Kelo, have been temporarily released from custody due to serious health complications. Both were serving an eight-year prison sentence handed down earlier this year.
Legal team cites humanitarian grounds for provisional freedom
According to Me Adoum Moussa, a member of their defense legal team, the decision follows urgent medical assessments indicating that both individuals require immediate external care. “Their advanced age and multiple chronic conditions made continued detention unsustainable,” he explained during a press briefing in Niamey.
The lawyer emphasized that this is a provisional measure, not a full acquittal or pardon. Me Bidi Valentin and Bombay Kelo remain under judicial supervision and could be recalled to custody at any time pending further court decisions.
Broader efforts to address health-related detention cases
The legal collective representing the former GCAP members confirmed that similar requests are being prepared for other detainees in the same case who are currently experiencing health crises. “We are actively pursuing temporary releases for those whose conditions have deteriorated behind bars,” Me Adoum Moussa stated.
This legal strategy is part of a wider push to ensure that incarceration does not exacerbate existing medical vulnerabilities among prisoners in Niger.
Appeal filed against original conviction
Despite the provisional releases, the defense team has formally lodged an appeal against the initial court ruling. “Justice must be impartial. We are confident that the appeal will be reviewed thoroughly by the appellate court in Niamey,” Me Adoum Moussa asserted.
The former GCAP leaders were convicted in early May on charges including rebellion, criminal association, and illegal possession of military-grade firearms. The original sentence has sparked debate regarding the intersection of politics and judicial proceedings in the country.
