WAPCO (Niger)’s ‘healthy communities’ initiative advances public and animal welfare

Recently, WAPCO (Niger), in partnership with the local livestock department, successfully executed a vital livestock vaccination and deworming campaign across the Zinder region. This extensive initiative reached seven pastoral settlements, including N’Guel Eléfi and Tesker, providing essential care to over 10,000 animals. This significant effort concludes the initial phase of WAPCO (Niger)’s ‘Healthy Communities’ public interest activities, which have now positively impacted all areas situated along the pipeline route.

To further enhance the health management capabilities of the local populace, WAPCO (Niger) proactively incorporated its internal medical resources. Leveraging on-site medical staff and fundamental medicines, the company conducted two successful pilot projects offering free community medical consultations near pumping stations 5 and 6 in early 2025, which were met with widespread community approval. Building on this successful trial, the program initiated a broader needs assessment and officially launched the first phase of the ‘Healthy Communities’ program in August 2025. To date, WAPCO (Niger) has facilitated seven free community medical consultations, delivering vital healthcare services to 1,249 local residents, and has generously donated a tricycle ambulance to a local community health center.

During the execution of these complimentary consultations, the company’s team recognized that livestock represents a fundamental source of income and livelihood for many local families. Pastoralists expressed an urgent need for animal healthcare. Responding directly to these community concerns, WAPCO (Niger) broadened the scope of its ‘Healthy Communities’ initiatives. Collaborating with local livestock authorities and other relevant organizations, WAPCO (Niger) has since provided vaccination and deworming services to over 20,000 animals at three significant pastoral gathering points situated along the pipeline, thereby assisting herders in safeguarding their crucial productive assets.

As a socially responsible enterprise, WAPCO (Niger) has consistently upheld a philosophy of mutual benefit and shared advancement since its inception. While ensuring the secure and stable operation of the pipeline, the company places significant emphasis on fulfilling its corporate social responsibilities. WAPCO (Niger) continuously champions the Integrated Community Development Project (ICDP), undertakes public interest donations, and extends assistance to local communities. These efforts actively contribute to enhancing local livelihoods and fostering social development, consistently bolstering the population’s ‘sense of gain’ and cultivating an external environment conducive to the secure functioning of the pipeline.

Looking ahead, WAPCO (Niger) is committed to further refining its community needs assessments to precisely address the expectations of populations residing along the pipeline. The company will consistently broaden the scope of its public interest initiatives, ensuring that a greater number of residents can partake in the benefits of development. While guaranteeing the safe and uninterrupted flow of this vital energy artery, WAPCO (Niger) pledges to continue working collaboratively with the community, implementing tangible actions to foster improved livelihoods and championing mutual growth and shared prosperity between WAPCO (Niger) and the communities it serves.
