Diplomatic calm after border incident between Central African Republic and Cameroon
A swift diplomatic response has restored calm along the Central African Republic-Cameroon border after a tense confrontation involving two Cameroonian gendarmes.
Videos circulating on social platforms captured the moment two armed Cameroonian officers entered the village of Gasol, located in Central African Republic territory. The officers, filmed by local residents, were accused of extortion as they moved through the area.
Responding to public reports, Central African Republic security forces intervened immediately, halting the officers’ advance. The soldiers, acting under orders to defend national sovereignty, disarmed the gendarmes and escorted them to the Beloko police station near the border.
High-level talks resolve incident
On Tuesday, high-ranking officials from both nations convened to address the incident. The meeting concluded with a commitment to preserve mutual respect and territorial integrity.
The recovered firearms were returned to Cameroonian authorities, and a joint monitoring committee was established to oversee the resolution process.
Border disputes have persisted for decades, with some Central African Republic communities alleging illegal occupation of border zones by Cameroon—a claim Yaoundé has consistently denied.
