Canada inaugurates its first embassy in Bénin, deepening bilateral ties

Sixty-four years after establishing diplomatic relations with Bénin, Canada has officially opened its first embassy in Cotonou. This historic inauguration, held on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, marks a significant step forward in strengthening the enduring friendship between the two nations.

The ceremony was presided over by Canadian Foreign Minister, the Honourable Anita Anand, who was on a working visit to Bénin. She was joined by her Béninese counterpart, Ms. Corinne Amori Brunet, along with members of the diplomatic corps and Hugues Oscar Lokossou, the Minister Delegate to the Minister of Economy and Finance, responsible for Mobilization of External Resources and Debt Management.

A new chapter in bilateral relations

This establishment of a fully operational embassy in Cotonou represents a profound advancement, underscoring the robust ties of friendship and the shared ambition of both nations to elevate their cooperation. The new diplomatic presence will significantly enhance political dialogue, facilitate more direct oversight of bilateral commitments, and solidify collaboration across various strategic sectors.

Minister Anand affirmed Canada’s unwavering commitment, stating, « Canada is determined to work with Bénin, and today we are injecting new momentum into this vital relationship. » Her Béninese counterpart, Ms. Corinne Amori Brunet, echoed this sentiment, highlighting that the embassy’s opening actualizes a closer bond and an intensification of relations between Bénin and Canada. « Our cooperation is expanding, diversifying, and investing more deeply in the economy, innovation, security, and human development – values cherished by both Bénin and Canada, » emphasized Bénin’s chief diplomat.

Key agreements and discussions

Earlier that same Wednesday morning, Minister Anand and Minister Brunet formalized a Memorandum of Understanding on political and diplomatic consultations. This crucial document establishes a permanent framework for ongoing dialogue, ensuring regular monitoring of bilateral engagements and strengthening coordination on significant regional and international matters.

An expanded working session also took place, bringing together key Béninese ministers. These included Olushegun Adjadi Bakari, Minister of Tourism and Foreign Trade, responsible for Industry and Private Investment Promotion; Gildas Agonkan, Minister Delegate to the President of the Republic, responsible for National Defense; and Hugues Oscar Lokossou, Minister Delegate to the Minister of Economy and Finance, responsible for Mobilization of External Resources and Debt Management.
