Mbombela (South Africa), June 2026 – Police authorities in Mpumalanga, a northeastern province of South Africa, confirmed the arrest of a man accused of brutally assaulting his elderly grandmother in the Nkomazi municipality. The detention, which took place on Sunday, June 7, 2026, follows the viral spread of a video capturing the entire violent incident.
The disturbing footage, filmed at a tavern in eMagogeni, shows the suspect repeatedly striking his victim with fists, kicks, and even a beer crate. A third individual is heard laughing in the background as the elderly woman, severely injured and unable to defend herself, lies helpless on the ground.

The preliminary investigation reveals financial motives behind the altercation. The elderly woman had noticed the disappearance of her monthly pension funds—money earmarked for food and utility bills—and confronted her grandson at the tavern to demand answers. Instead of resolving the issue, the confrontation escalated into a brutal attack.
Swift action by local police, aided by the video’s widespread circulation, led to the suspect’s rapid identification and apprehension. He now faces charges of deliberate assault and aggravated assault, with a court appearance scheduled in the coming days.
