Sahel-Russia ties deepen with new Niamey security and trade talks

Niamey played host this past Wednesday, July 8, to the second round of strategic consultations between foreign ministers of the Sahel Alliance Confederation (AES) and Russia’s top diplomat, Sergey Lavrov.

Joining the Nigerien delegation led by Bakary Yaou Sangaré were his counterparts from Mali (Abdoulaye Diop) and Burkina Faso (Karamoko Jean Marie Traoré). The gathering produced fresh alignment on priority areas where the four nations’ diplomatic agendas converge.

Diop highlighted the “steady, productive exchanges” between the AES and Russia, noting significant strides in both defense cooperation and economic growth initiatives built on shared diplomatic vision.

Discussions on regional counter-terrorism efforts centered on the need for “bolstered joint military action to further strengthen the operational readiness of the AES Unified Force.” Ministers also underlined the importance of expanding economic partnerships as outlined in the Confederation’s Second-Year Implementation Roadmap.

Lavrov, addressing the session, reaffirmed Russia’s commitment to a “mutually advantageous partnership” with the AES bloc, vowing continued support for both security operations across the confederation and sustainable development projects aimed at improving local livelihoods.

The Niamey talks follow an earlier April 2025 round held in Moscow, part of Lavrov’s recent African diplomatic tour.
