Gabon prepares for high-level diplomatic visits

Two African heads of state are set to arrive in Libreville in the coming days to attend Gabon‘s 66th independence anniversary celebrations. President Félix Tshisekedi of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) will arrive on August 15, while General Horta N’Tam, leader of Guinea-Bissau, will follow on August 18, according to an official announcement from the Gabonese presidency.

The Congolese leader will participate in the main independence day festivities on August 17, marking the country’s declaration of independence in 1960. His counterpart from Guinea-Bissau will arrive the day after the celebrations conclude. Both visits aim to reinforce bilateral relations and cooperation between Gabon and these nations.

Political contexts shaping regional diplomacy

These visits occur against a backdrop of significant political developments in the three countries. In Gabon, the diplomatic engagements follow the institutional normalization process initiated after the August 2023 military takeover, which saw Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema assume leadership before his April 2025 presidential election victory, restoring constitutional order.

Meanwhile, Félix Tshisekedi, re-elected in December 2023 for a second term, faces ongoing challenges in the DRC, particularly the persistent insurgency in the eastern regions. The M23 rebel group continues to exert control over several areas despite regional and international mediation efforts.

Guinea-Bissau, too, is navigating a transitional phase following a November 2025 military coup. General Horta N’Tam, then army chief of staff, was installed as transitional president after the ousting of Umaro Sissoco Embalo, three days following a disputed presidential election. The coup drew condemnation from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), leading to the suspension of the electoral process and prolonged negotiations over the transition’s duration.
