As Côte d’Ivoire marked World Plastic Bag Free Day in July 2026, SOLIBRA unveiled a groundbreaking initiative, ECO BOX, designed to combat plastic pollution and foster sustainable circular economy practices in the heart of Treichville. This strategic move targets one of the city’s most pressing environmental challenges: the daily accumulation of plastic waste clogging drains and straining sanitation systems.

The project’s core mission is to convert mounting plastic waste into valuable resources through an efficient collection and recycling framework. Treichville was selected for this pilot program due to its high volume of plastic waste, which poses significant threats to public health and urban infrastructure. By addressing this issue head-on, ECO BOX aims to restore cleanliness in the city while unlocking new economic prospects for local communities.

The success of ECO BOX hinges on a powerful alliance between SOLIBRA, the J’Adore Foundation of Treichville, and BIRWAST, a leading plastic recycling enterprise. Together, these partners are pooling expertise and resources to overhaul waste management practices, reduce environmental harm, and stimulate job creation in the area.

To kickstart operations, a suite of essential equipment was distributed to the cleanup teams, including six wheelbarrows, a motorized tricycle for waste collection, 80 durable trash bags, twelve rakes, along with protective gear such as gloves, shovels, and traditional brooms. These tools are already enabling teams to work more effectively and safely as they navigate the streets of Treichville.

ECO BOX sets ambitious targets to make a lasting impact. Primary objectives include gradually eliminating plastic waste from drainage systems to lower flood risks, creating employment opportunities for local youth as collectors and drivers, and transforming collected plastics into reusable materials through recycling processes.

Beyond logistics, the initiative places strong emphasis on community awareness. Cleanup crews are actively engaging with residents, educating them on proper waste sorting and encouraging sustainable habits to cultivate a culture of cleanliness and environmental responsibility throughout the commune.

The official launch event featured a ribbon-cutting ceremony to symbolize the project’s commencement, followed by the symbolic handover of the first motorized tricycle to a dedicated agent. This individual will now patrol Treichville’s neighborhoods daily, collecting plastic waste and serving as a visible ambassador for the city’s cleaner, greener future.
