Solibra’s eco box initiative targets plastic pollution in treichville, Côte d’Ivoire

SOLIBRA has officially unveiled the ECO BOX project, a significant undertaking designed to intensify efforts against plastic pollution and champion a sustainable circular economy within the Treichville commune. This launch coincided with World No Plastic Bag Day, observed on July 3, 2026.

The decision to focus on Treichville was strategic, given the substantial volumes of plastic waste generated daily in the area. These discarded plastics frequently clog drainage systems and compromise vital sanitation infrastructure. In response, ECO BOX aims to transform this waste into valuable resources through a meticulously structured collection and recycling framework.

This ambitious project thrives on a collaborative partnership involving SOLIBRA, the local Fondation J’Adore de Treichville, and BIRWAST, a firm specializing in plastic waste recycling. This powerful synergy is set to enhance waste management practices, safeguard the urban environment, and cultivate new economic opportunities at the local level.

To ensure the immediate commencement of operations, essential equipment has been distributed to the operational teams. This includes six wheelbarrows, a dedicated collection tricycle, 80 robust trash bags, twelve rakes, alongside gloves, shovels, and traditional brooms.

Through the ECO BOX initiative, the partners are committed to achieving several critical objectives. These include the gradual elimination of plastic waste from canals to significantly mitigate flood risks, the creation of employment opportunities for local youth as collection agents and drivers, and the valorization of collected plastics through efficient recycling processes.

The project also places a strong emphasis on community engagement and awareness. Collection agents will play a crucial role in educating residents, encouraging them to adopt proper waste sorting habits, and fostering a widespread culture of cleanliness throughout the commune.

The launch ceremony was highlighted by the symbolic cutting of the ribbon, officially marking the start of the ECO BOX project. This was followed by the handover of keys for the first collection tricycle to an agent, who will soon be navigating the streets of Treichville to gather plastic waste.
