Ministerial talks open in Cotonou to strengthen Atlantic African cooperation
The 7th Ministerial Meeting of the African Atlantic States Process (AASP) got underway today in Cotonou, co-chaired by Morocco and Benin. The gathering aims to reinforce political momentum behind this African-led initiative, guided by the vision of His Majesty King Mohammed VI.
The Moroccan delegation, led by Ambassador Mohamed Methqal, Director General of the Moroccan Agency for International Cooperation (AMCI), includes prominent figures such as Tarik Iziraren, Permanent Secretary of the AASP, Moroccan Ambassador to Benin Rachid Rguibi, and senior officials from the ministries of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccans Residing Abroad.
The African Atlantic States Process reflects King Mohammed VI’s commitment to transforming the Atlantic African space into a region of shared peace, stability, and prosperity.
Since its inauguration in Rabat in June 2022, the initiative has made significant strides, including establishing a permanent secretariat in Rabat, forming three thematic working groups, and adopting a joint action plan focused on political dialogue, maritime security, blue economy, maritime connectivity, energy, and marine environmental protection.
Previous ministerial gatherings held in Rabat, New York on the sidelines of UN General Assembly sessions, and Praia in May 2025 resulted in several declarations and action plans to deepen cooperation among Atlantic African states in maritime security, fisheries preservation, energy transition, and sustainable development.
The Cotonou meeting continues this momentum by seeking to enhance coordination among member states to advance integration and co-development across the Atlantic African region.
