Chadian independence day: Pahimi Padacké Albert calls for unity and reconciliation

As Chad prepares to observe its 66th Independence Day on August 11, 2026, Pahimi Padacké Albert, the leader of the opposition and president of the National Rally of Chadian Democrats (RNDT-Le Réveil), has issued a heartfelt plea for national unity, appeasement, and reconciliation.

In his address commemorating this significant national holiday, the former Prime Minister conveyed his message to the Chadian populace with profound “humility, gravity, and a sense of responsibility.”

Pahimi Padacké Albert highlighted that this year’s celebration unfolds against a backdrop of considerable political strain and widespread discontent. He asserted, “We mark our freedom this year amidst a climate of quiet yet oppressive political tension and frustrations fueled by a pervasive feeling of multifaceted exclusion.”

Responding to this challenging environment, the head of RNDT-Le Réveil advocated strongly for increased dialogue and greater openness. He reiterated, “Today, I once again responsibly appeal for unity, appeasement, a spirit of openness, and the reconciliation of hearts across our nation.”

In his powerful message, Pahimi Padacké Albert directly addressed the President of the Republic, Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno, urging him to implement measures designed to bolster national cohesion.

He solemnly declared, “On the eve of this celebration, I make a formal appeal to all Chadians, and foremost among them, the Marshal of Chad, President of the Republic, Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno: May decisive actions emerge to overcome feelings of exclusion and further unite our people within the Chadian family. May the constitutional resources available to the Head of State be deployed to restore freedom to political figures whose rightful place is not in prison. May genuine political openness, built upon frank, fraternal, and patriotic discussions, solidify this momentum towards appeasement, while honoring the rich political, cultural, and religious diversity of our country’s sons and daughters.”
