Chad sonelgaz 40 mw tri-fuel power plant N’Djamena

The energy landscape in Chad is set for a transformative leap with the fast-tracked development of a 40 MW tri-fuel power plant in N’Djamena. This strategic initiative is being driven by a landmark partnership with Algeria’s leading energy giant, Sonelgaz. A high-level delegation led by Sonelgaz International CEO Yazid Djellouli recently visited the Chadian capital to finalize technical blueprints and operational timelines in collaboration with Tchad-Elec teams.

At the heart of this project lies its innovative tri-fuel technology, which enables the plant to operate seamlessly using natural gas or alternative liquid fuels. For N’Djamena—where power outages remain a persistent challenge and energy demand continues to climb—this adaptable solution ensures a stable and reliable electricity supply. It allows operators to switch between fuel sources based on local availability or import costs, safeguarding energy security and operational continuity.

Beyond electricity generation, the partnership emphasizes knowledge sharing and capacity building. Sonelgaz, renowned for its expertise in operating large-scale energy networks across North Africa, will support the Chadian National Electricity Company (SNE) in plant maintenance, performance optimization, and long-term management. This South-South collaboration is designed to empower local engineers and technicians, fostering technical independence and ensuring the project’s sustainability well into the future.

The stakes for Chad extend far beyond technical feasibility. By diversifying its energy partners and investing in flexible, multi-fuel infrastructure, the country is taking bold steps toward reducing reliance on expensive fossil fuels. This initiative also strengthens the national grid, paving the way for industrial growth, economic resilience, and a more stable business environment. Reliable energy access, after all, remains a cornerstone of sustainable development and economic progress in Chad.
