A major milestone has been reached for Senegalese aviation. Air Sénégal officially integrated a brand-new Boeing 737-800 into its fleet, christened “Gorée”. Announced in Dakar on September 7, 2026, this modern aircraft represents a strategic leap forward, designed to bolster the carrier’s operational capabilities and reinforce the nation’s overall aerial sovereignty.

This acquisition was made possible through crucial financial backing from the state of Sénégal, facilitated by the Ministry of Land and Air Transport under the leadership of Abdoul Ahad Ndiaye. Championed by President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, the initiative aligns with a broader national vision to equip the country with an aviation infrastructure capable of matching its ambitious economic, tourism, and international development goals.

The newly delivered single-aisle aircraft belongs to the highly reliable Boeing 737 NG family, celebrated for its efficiency on short to medium-haul routes. This addition provides Air Sénégal with vital extra capacity to expand its flight network. The cabin is configured in a two-class layout, offering a total of 174 seats: 12 premium spots in Business class and 162 in Economy class, all fitted with high-quality Recaro seating. Physically, the aircraft spans 39.5 meters in length with a wingspan of 35.8 meters, and features three restrooms alongside three galleys to optimize onboard comfort.

Naming the aircraft “Gorée” carries deep historical weight. The island of Gorée, a memorial site of the transatlantic slave trade and a designated UNESCO World Heritage site since 1978, stands globally as a powerful symbol of remembrance, resilience, and intercultural dialogue.
