In a show of grassroots strength, opposition leader Ousmane Sonko launched his party’s membership card sales campaign in Bargny, addressing a packed crowd of activists and local officials. The event marked the first stop of a wider tour that will continue across several communities as Pastef seeks to strengthen its organizational base ahead of upcoming elections.
The former Prime Minister arrived in Bargny to a warm welcome, with residents and political figures gathering to hear his message. Speaking with conviction, Sonko stressed the strategic importance of the membership drive, calling it essential for shaping the party’s future success. “I came to motivate our members in selling membership cards—not to give a speech,” he told the crowd, urging every supporter to play an active role in the campaign.
Building momentum for future elections
Sonko framed the membership initiative as a cornerstone of election readiness, arguing that the turnout in Bargny reflects the party’s deep roots in local communities. “This campaign will determine the outcome of the next elections,” he declared, emphasizing that widespread participation is key to Pastef’s ambitions.
The leader also acknowledged the hardships faced by residents under the previous administration, expressing solidarity with those who suffered during that period. “I remember what you endured—especially the victims under Macky Sall’s government,” he said. “I have not forgotten Bargny.”
Challenges and resilience in Pastef’s journey
While celebrating the momentum, Sonko acknowledged the hurdles ahead, including accountability, political violence, and development gaps. “We still lack the means to match our ambitions,” he admitted, yet he remained optimistic about the progress made since Pastef took office.
Urging discipline and composure, he called on supporters to stay focused amid rising political tensions. “We’re 80% toward our goal—only 20% left,” he noted, referring to both membership targets and broader political objectives. “Every card sold brings us closer to victory.”
