The question hanging over the Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán this weekend is blunt: can anyone slow down Barcelona? Six wins from six in La Liga, 28 goals scored and only six conceded, capped by a 7-2 demolition of Racing Santander in which Raphinha grabbed a hat-trick. Moved into a false nine role by Hansi Flick, the Brazilian and Lamine Yamal lead an attack averaging nearly five goals a game.

On the other side stands Sevilla, a club that appears to have closed the book on a season that ended 13th, one point above relegation. The Andalusians sit fourth on 13 points, built on narrow wins under Luis García Plaza, such as those against Valencia and at Deportivo La Coruña (0-1). Their only defeat came at home to Atlético de Madrid (1-3).

Sevilla: the latest team news

Thirteenth last season and long threatened by relegation, Sevilla have transformed their look. Under Luis García Plaza, the Andalusians already have four wins from six matches, often ground out by the smallest margin, as in the last two outings against Valencia and then Deportivo La Coruña (1-0 each time). The standout result so far remains the victory at San Mamés against Athletic Bilbao (1-3), and only Atlético de Madrid have left the Sánchez-Pizjuán with a win (1-3). With 13 points, the club sits fourth and has scored in every game, driven by a collective where goals come from everywhere.

That revival also stems from a transfer window conducted at full speed. Youssouf Fofana, formerly of Milan, brings experience to midfield, where Jon Guridi and Giorgi Kochorashvili also arrived. At the back, Juan Iglesias quickly made the right flank his own, going as far as to deliver the winning goal against Valencia. Up front, former Saint-Étienne man Lucas Stassin and Félix Correia, on loan from Lille, add pace and depth. The dressing room, however, has lost several familiar faces: César Azpilicueta has retired, and goalkeeper Ørjan Nyland, Nemanja Gudelj, Juanlu and Akor Adams have departed, as has Neal Maupay, who returned to Marseille. Rubén Vargas, injured, remains the only notable absentee for the visit of Barça.

Nothing seems able to stop Barça. Back-to-back champions, the Catalan club have won their first six La Liga matches without ever looking troubled in the table. The thrashings came in sequence, from Elche to Mestalla (0-5 each time), right up to the rout of Racing Santander on Wednesday (7-2). The only minor blemish was the win at Levante (2-4), marred by two defensive blunders in the closing minutes. With 28 goals to their name, Hansi Flick boasts by far the best attack in Spain, without even fielding a true centre-forward. Deployed as the spearhead, Raphinha is the symbol of it all: after his hat-trick against Racing, the captain has already found the net nine times and leads Lamine Yamal, on seven goals, in the scoring charts.

The summer was turbulent in Catalonia, though. Deprived of Robert Lewandowski, who left for MLS, Deco opened the chequebook for more than €170 million. Anthony Gordon immediately made his mark on the left, with four assists, while Karim Adeyemi and Gabriel Jesus widen the attacking options. The arrival of Rodri, the 2024 Ballon d’Or winner, gives the midfield another dimension, and João Cancelo, now signed permanently, also scored on Wednesday. The dressing room has seen several familiar faces leave: Ferran Torres, Ronald Araújo, Marc-André ter Stegen, as well as Marcus Rashford, who returned to Manchester United after his loan. At the Sánchez-Pizjuán, Flick will again have to do without Frenkie de Jong and Roony Bardghji, both in the treatment room.
