A significant political schism has now been formalized in Senegal, marking a definitive break between President Bassirou Diomaye Faye and his former close ally, Ousmane Sonko, who leads the ruling Pastef party.
The Senegalese head of state officially inaugurated his own distinct political party this past Saturday.
Bassirou Diomaye Faye, previously a prominent figure within Pastef under Ousmane Sonko’s leadership, has founded the Parti des Patriotes Républicains, thereby formalizing a separation that has been anticipated for several months.
This development ignites an open power struggle, unfolding against a backdrop of a severe national debt crisis.
In the weeks leading up to this launch, a growing number of Pastef officials, including various regional leaders and members of its youth wing, had already departed from the party to align themselves with President Faye. Additionally, several figures from the opposition party, the Alliance pour la République, have also joined Faye’s burgeoning movement.
Both Faye and Sonko ascended to power collectively in 2024, campaigning under the banner of Pastef, an acronym for its French designation: Patriotes Africains du Sénégal pour le Travail, l’Éthique et la Fraternité.
The alliance between Faye and Sonko, which had been strategically formed for the 2024 presidential election, ultimately fractured due to fundamental disagreements over critical policy decisions. These included differing approaches to negotiations with the International Monetary Fund regarding a crucial loan program, particularly amidst the country’s profound debt crisis.
The establishment of President Faye’s new party signals the beginning of an intense political contest between these former allies, a rivalry anticipated to unfold during the 2027 local elections and potentially shape the landscape for the 2029 presidential campaign.
