Kjell Scherpen is heading back to the Premier League, according to reports from Algemeen Dagblad this weekend. The Belgian goalkeeper, who turns 26 next month, has left Union Saint-Gilloise for Ipswich Town, a club that faces promotion.
Scherpen had an excellent season in Belgium, helping Union win both the Croky Cup and the Golden Glove award for best goalkeeper with most clean sheets.
Interest in Scherpen had been growing since May, with clubs from Italy, Germany, and England showing interest. The 1.06-meter-tall Dutchman was signed by Brighton & Hove Albion in 2021 from Ajax for €5 million on a five-year deal.
However, his time in England did not materialize immediately. After loan spells with KV Ostende, Vitesse, and Sturm Graz, Scherpen joined Union Saint-Gilloise permanently in 2025 for around €2 million until the middle of 2028.
Ipswich has also strengthened its squad with Kayne van Oevelen from FC Volendam. The Dutchman will compete with Christian Walton and Scherpen for a spot in goal, although Walton is seen as the top choice by many.
Scherpen will need to pass a medical before finalizing his move to Tractor Boys, who are set to sign him on a four-year deal.
