Russia-Chad ties strengthen during Russia Day observance
The Russian Embassy in Chad marked Russia Day by emphasizing the deepening of bilateral ties, particularly in education and security cooperation.
This year’s Russia Day observance in Chad’s capital drew attention to the flourishing partnership between Moscow and N’Djaména. Ambassador Vladimir Sokolenko highlighted the steady progress in bilateral relations, built on mutual respect and shared objectives.
In his address, the ambassador emphasized Russia’s endorsement of Chad’s social progress agenda and its drive for greater sovereignty. The two nations have deepened political dialogue, with Russian President Vladimir Putin extending an invitation to Chadian leader Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno for the upcoming Russia-Africa Summit in Moscow this October. This follows the Chadian head of state’s official visit to Russia in early 2024.
Diplomatic engagement has intensified over the past two years. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov made his first official visit to N’Djaména in June 2024, capping six decades of bilateral relations. Their September 2024 meeting on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly’s 80th session further strengthened ties, with discussions focusing on current challenges and opportunities in Russia-Chad cooperation.
diplomatic milestones and shared global priorities
The Russian and Chadian foreign ministries continue high-level consultations based on a 2024 agreement signed in Sochi. Both countries are coordinating efforts to amplify African interests in UN Security Council reform discussions, advocating for a more inclusive international system. This aligns with UN Secretary-General António Guterres’ recent call for sweeping reforms to address Africa’s underrepresentation in global governance.
regional stability and peacekeeping support
Russia has praised Chad’s leadership in regional conflict resolution and its contributions to peacekeeping missions. Earlier this year, six Chadian police officers began training in Russia as part of a UN peacekeeping capacity-building program. Both nations are pushing for expanded security cooperation across Central Africa and the Sahel, prioritizing regional stability.
Economic collaboration is also gaining traction. Russia supports Chad’s push within the African Union to diversify regional payment systems and explore alternatives to the CFA franc.
education and human capital development
The cornerstone of Russia-Chad cooperation remains human resource development. Russian universities continue to welcome Chadian students, with Chad securing one of the largest national quotas—360 scholarships. The “Professionalisation” initiative, which combines vocational training with production hubs, is expanding to meet growing demand for technical education. Discussions are underway to streamline recruitment processes and increase the number of scholarships available to Chadian youth.
Russia’s engagement in Chad reflects a commitment to equal partnership and mutual benefit. With strong foundations in place, both countries are poised to further elevate their friendship and collaboration.
Russia Day, celebrated annually since 1990, commemorates the start of Russia’s post-Soviet democratization process—a pivotal chapter in the nation’s long history.
The event in N’Djaména was attended by senior Chadian officials, including the Secretary-General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, African Integration, and Chadians Abroad, alongside diplomatic representatives and local authorities.
