Bodø/Glimt coach targets control against Union in Champions League clash

Kjetil Knutsen, manager of Norwegian side Bodø/Glimt, has set clear objectives ahead of Tuesday’s Champions League qualifier against Union Saint-Gilloise. Speaking in a near-empty press room at KVDO Arena in Ostend, the Norwegian tactician acknowledged the challenge posed by his Belgian opponents.

“We know Union Saint-Gilloise is a very strong team,” Knutsen said. “Their style is physical and direct, and while we understand their strengths and weaknesses, we also have our own identity to assert. Our game plan is built to take control of the match. We always play offensively, whether at home or away, and we won’t settle for defending for 95 minutes.”

Shared history and evolving dynamics

The two teams met once before, during the 2024–25 Europa League group stage, when they played out a 0–0 draw at Brussels’ King Baudouin Stadium. Knutsen, who has led Bodø/Glimt since early 2018, reflected on that encounter but emphasized how much Union has changed since then.

“Some players from that match remain, but the team has evolved. Their model is consistent: they integrate new players quickly, help them grow, and then sell them at a profit. Like us, they’re not one of Europe’s giants, but they’ve improved over the years. In Belgium, they’re among the top two, alongside Club Bruges, and they’re doing an outstanding job.”

Tactical clarity and confidence

Knutsen’s side has already made a name for itself on the European stage, notably defeating Manchester City and Atlético Madrid in last season’s group phase. Despite the high stakes of the Champions League qualifiers, the Norwegian coach remains focused on executing his team’s philosophy.

“We have a solid foundation and a clear vision,” he said. “We don’t change our approach based on the opponent. Our mentality is to play attractive, attacking football. We want to dictate the tempo, create chances, and put Union under pressure from the first whistle.”
