Patrice Talon elected President of Benin’s historic first Senate

Four months after departing the presidency of the Republic, Patrice Talon has been elected President of Benin’s first-ever Senate. This landmark institution, established through the 2025 constitutional reform, aims to strengthen the country’s political framework. The election took place in Porto-Novo, where the 25-member Senate—comprising former presidents and state-appointed figures—convened for its inaugural session.

Patrice Talon secures overwhelming mandate

In a unanimous decision, Patrice Talon was elected to lead the Senate with 24 votes out of 25, with only a single blank ballot cast. The new upper house, which began operations in late July, represents a significant innovation in Benin’s political landscape. Talon, who served as President from 2016 to 2026, emphasized the Senate’s role in fostering national unity, political stability, and democratic governance during his inauguration speech.

A Senate designed for stability and continuity

Patrice Talon pledged to transform the Senate into a cohesive institution dedicated to the smooth functioning of Benin’s democratic processes. The chamber includes prominent political figures such as former Presidents Thomas Boni Yayi and Nicéphore Soglo, as well as Paul Hounkpè, a former opposition presidential candidate. The constitutional reform that created the Senate reflects a broader effort to modernize Benin’s political architecture and enhance institutional resilience.

Talon’s election to the Senate follows his peaceful transfer of power to Romuald Wadagni, his former Minister of Economy, who was elected President in April. This transition underscores Benin’s commitment to democratic norms and the peaceful rotation of leadership.
