Patrice Talon elected president of Bénin senate with unity call

In a historic moment for Bénin’s political landscape, Patrice Talon has been elected president of the newly established Senate. The former president addressed legislators in Porto-Novo, calling for unity and shared responsibility to guide the upper house through its five-year mandate.

Transition to Senate leadership

Two months after handing over the presidency to Romuald Wadagni, Patrice Talon assumes a new official role. Senators convened in Porto-Novo to elect him as head of the upper chamber, alongside Louis Vlavonou as vice president and Alassane Seidou as rapporteur.

Unity and collaboration take center stage

In his inaugural speech, Talon expressed gratitude to his colleagues and emphasized the importance of transforming the Senate into a cohesive body. He highlighted the positive atmosphere that characterized the election process, stating, “We have experienced extraordinary moments that erased our differences and fostered a spirit of cooperation.”

He pledged to leverage his experience to strengthen the institution, affirming, “I will ensure this Senate operates as a united family, guided by consensus and collective responsibility.”

Talon outlined four key priorities for the Senate’s new mandate:

He concluded with a call for accountability, urging legislators to hold each other to high standards: “I rely on each of you to remind us of our duties whenever we fall short.”

The election follows the official inauguration of the Senate on July 30 and the constitutional validation of its internal regulations on August 3, marking a significant step in Bénin’s democratic evolution.
