“Senegalese people did not fight for this”

In a particularly impactful segment of his speech, he declared emphatically: “The Senegalese people did not vote for this. The Senegalese people did not fight for this. Lives were not sacrificed for this. Individuals did not endure imprisonment for this. The Senegalese people fought to transform the system. Yet today, that very same system occupies the palace and continues to organize itself.”

This statement underscores a now undeniable schism between the influential Pastef leader and the individual currently holding the nation’s highest office. Sonko’s remarks directly target the present administration’s governance, which he perceives as a betrayal of the struggles waged during their time in opposition. Displaying a clear resolve to challenge President Bassirou Diomaye Faye of Kiiraay — Les Patriotes républicains in forthcoming electoral contests, Ousmane Sonko expressed unwavering confidence in a future victory, irrespective of any political maneuvers by his adversaries.

“That is why I believe he can align with all the mayors or form alliances with all the parties he desires. My appeal is solely to the people. Because in a democracy, there is only one truth, and that truth belongs to the people,” he proclaimed, directing his message not only to his loyal militants but also to all citizens of Senegal.
