Ousmane Sonko champions united and sovereign africa at upa session

Dakar became the epicenter of African parliamentary diplomacy on June 2 and 3, 2026, as delegates from across the continent gathered for the 85th session of the African Parliamentary Union (APU) Executive Committee. Senegal’s National Assembly President, Ousmane Sonko, delivered a keynote address emphasizing the critical need for continental unity and sovereignty.
In his opening remarks, Mr. Sonko conveyed his joy and pride in welcoming legislative representatives from African nations to Dakar. He extended warm, fraternal greetings from the Senegalese Parliament and people, affirming the continental solidarity that underpins this gathering.
The President underscored the urgent importance of strengthening parliamentary cooperation across Africa, particularly amid persistent political, economic, and security challenges facing the continent. « In an era where our continent faces multifaceted challenges, parliamentary collaboration is no longer optional but a necessity, » he stated.
Ousmane Sonko reaffirmed his unwavering commitment to the panafrican vision, asserting that Africa’s future must be shaped by Africans themselves. He championed a path rooted in the continent’s shared values, collective aspirations, and sovereign interests.
The National Assembly President expressed his hope that this 85th session would serve as a catalyst for deeper African integration and the advancement of the continent’s shared ambitions. He wished all delegates a productive and enriching stay in Dakar before concluding with a powerful message of unity: « Long live African parliamentary cooperation. Long live a united and sovereign Africa. »
