A deadly Boko Haram assault on a military outpost near N’Guigmi in southeastern Niger left several soldiers dead on Friday, marking one of the deadliest insurgent attacks in the region this year.

Located in the Diffa region near the shores of Lake Chad, N’Guigmi has become a hotspot for militant activity since 2009. The town now hosts both Boko Haram and Islamic State’s West Africa Province (ISWAP) fighters, turning it into a battleground for regional security forces.

Local sources confirmed the attack, stating that “ten soldiers and four National Guard members were killed in the assault,” while acknowledging that “some assailants also perished in the clash.” Military officials have since launched sweeping clearance operations in the surrounding areas.

Governor confirms funeral for fallen defenders

The governor of Diffa, General Mahamadou Ibrahim Bagadoma, attended funeral services in N’Guigmi for the “security forces who fell with their weapons in hand defending the nation,” according to official statements. The military has not yet released an official death toll.

Regional instability fueled by decade-long insurgency

The ongoing Boko Haram insurgency has claimed thousands of lives and displaced millions across the Lake Chad Basin, including communities in northeastern Nigeria, southern Niger, Chad, and Cameroon. Neighboring countries have reactivated their Multinational Joint Task Force—established in 1994—to combat the threat.

In May, Chad launched airstrikes and ground operations against Boko Haram positions on remote Lake Chad islands, supported by Nigerian and Nigerien forces. This followed multiple deadly raids by the jihadist group on Chad’s military.

Meanwhile, western Niger continues to face attacks from Al-Qaeda and ISIS-affiliated groups. Since July 2023, the country has been under military rule, struggling to curb the escalating violence.
