N’Djamena to host African water forum in 2026
The African Water Forum 2026, themed From Vision to Action, will take place in N’Djamena, Chad, on July 15-16, bringing together key stakeholders to tackle the continent’s water challenges.
Chad’s strategic role in Africa’s water security
The Chadian Minister of Finance, Budget, Economy, Planning and International Cooperation recently held a press briefing to unveil the forum’s significance. The country’s vast water resources—including the Lake Chad, major rivers like the Chari and Logone, and transboundary basins such as the Nubian Sandstone Aquifer—position Chad as a pivotal player in regional water management.
« Chad is not just a host; we are a solution provider, » the minister emphasized. « Our shared water basins face immense pressure from climate change, rapid population growth, and underdeveloped infrastructure. This forum is our commitment to turning these challenges into opportunities for sustainable development. »
Key priorities: access, irrigation, and shared governance
The government’s agenda includes expanding clean water access and sanitation, particularly for vulnerable communities; boosting agricultural irrigation to ensure food security; and fostering cross-border cooperation with neighboring countries in the Lake Chad Basin and Nubian Aquifer.
« Water is the foundation of development, peace, and resilience, » the minister stated. « By 2026, Chad aims to set a new standard for water governance in Africa, aligning with the Water Forward initiative—ensuring water for people, food, and the planet. »
Partnerships and long-term impact
Collaboration with the World Bank was highlighted as a cornerstone of Chad’s water strategy. A new project in development reflects the country’s long-term vision, integrating water security into national development plans.
The forum is expected to yield tangible outcomes, including national water compacts for participating countries and robust monitoring mechanisms to ensure accountability. « Chad is ready to lead by example, » the minister concluded, « not just as a host, but as an advocate for Africa’s water transformation. »
