CEDEAO and UN Women launch groundbreaking regional program on gender and green economy
Abidjan, 22 May 2026 — The Economic Community of West African States (CEDEAO) Gender Development Centre (CCDG), in partnership with UN Women and multiple CEDEAO agencies, has validated a comprehensive regional program addressing gender equality, climate resilience, and green economy initiatives, as confirmed in an official communiqué released today.
The two-day validation workshop, held on 15–16 May at the CEDEAO Resident Representation in Côte d’Ivoire, focused on finalizing the strategic framework and defining a clear implementation roadmap for the program.
The initiative is designed to bolster regional efforts in addressing the most pressing priorities of member states, particularly in gender mainstreaming, climate adaptation, and ecological transition. It also aims to mobilize resources to support the CEDEAO Gender and Climate Action Plan.
Empowering women through green opportunities
Sandra Oulaté Fattoh, Director of the CEDEAO Gender Development Centre, highlighted that ecological transition presents both challenges and unprecedented opportunities for women and girls across West Africa. She emphasized that inclusive policies must be developed to ensure that no one is left behind in this transformative process.
From policy to action
Adjaratou Fatou Ndiaye, UN Women Resident Representative in Côte d’Ivoire, described the initiative as a pivotal shift from political rhetoric to concrete action in tackling climate and economic challenges across the region. She stressed the importance of translating commitments into measurable outcomes that benefit communities on the ground.
Towards an inclusive green transition
Dr Kalilou Sylla, CEDEAO Commissioner for Economic Affairs and Agriculture, underscored the need for a green transition that is both sustainable and inclusive. He called for policies that create real economic opportunities for women and youth, ensuring their active participation in shaping a resilient future for West Africa.
The finalized program document is expected to be officially adopted during a working session scheduled for 29 June to 6 July 2026 in Lomé, Togo.
