Morocco and us advance strategic multi-domain defense center in tan-tan

A groundbreaking strategic multi-domain center, known as AMTEC, is currently under development in Tan-Tan, Morocco. This innovative facility is designed around three core components: a Multi-Domain Training Area (MDTA), a dedicated Drone Academy (MTDA), and an advanced Innovation and Experimentation Center. The primary objective of AMTEC is to accelerate the modernization of military capabilities by integrating cutting-edge technologies and fostering enhanced interoperability among both African and Western partner nations.

General Mohammed Berrid, Inspector General of the Royal Moroccan Armed Forces (FAR), highlighted Morocco’s inherent strengths, asserting that the nation possesses the necessary resources to swiftly bring this ambitious vision to fruition. He emphasized, “Morocco’s preparedness, bolstered by existing infrastructure and highly skilled human capital, allows for a rapid transition from conceptualization to operational reality.” General Berrid further underscored the Kingdom’s significant potential as a reliable industrial partner for the United States.

The MDTA will provide an advanced training environment, enabling military forces to prepare for complex operations across various scenarios, including the full electromagnetic spectrum. Concurrently, the Drone Academy is specifically designed to train African operators in small Unmanned Aircraft Systems (sUAS) technologies, with a particular emphasis on counter-terrorism strategies throughout West Africa.

The third pillar, the Innovation and Experimentation Center, is envisioned as a dynamic laboratory for developing and testing operational solutions. It will facilitate the rapid evaluation of emerging technologies, particularly in artificial intelligence, autonomous systems, and advanced communication protocols. A significant focus will be placed on creating cost-effective and scalable solutions, specifically tailored to the unique operational realities of the African continent.

Beyond its core military functions, this ambitious project also promises substantial economic and technological benefits. It anticipates active involvement from industrial and academic stakeholders, fostering a vibrant ecosystem of innovation in defense technologies. AMTEC is poised to become a vital testing ground for future wireless and detection technologies, while simultaneously contributing to economic development in underserved regions.

General Dagvin Anderson, commander of AFRICOM, described this initiative as “a significant opportunity for American and African defense industrial bases, as well as academic institutions, to innovate and develop solutions specifically adapted to emerging challenges.

The upcoming African Lion 2027 exercise is expected to serve as the initial proof of concept for the new center. This annual exercise, regularly hosted in Morocco, already functions as a large-scale operational laboratory for integrating state-of-the-art technologies under real-world conditions.
