Mali’s transitional president goïta redefines terrorism to include media and international pressure

General Assimi Goïta, the transitional president of Mali, delivered a significant political address on May 27, 2026, from Koulouba. This statement followed the Eid al-Kebir prayer, held within the presidential palace in Bamako. Addressing a gathering that included the Prime Minister, the head of the National Transitional Council, various government members, and accredited diplomats in Mali, General Goïta publicly expanded the concept of terrorism. His new definition now encompasses not only military threats but also influences from the media, economic sectors, political spheres, state actions, and international pressures.

A prayer deviating from customary protocol

Due to prevailing security concerns within Bamako, the traditional solemn Eid prayer did not take place this year at the Grand Mosque of Bagadadji, its usual venue for official ceremonies. Instead, the banquet hall at Koulouba was specially prepared to host the religious observance. Imam Mahmoud Touré, affiliated with the presidential palace mosque, led the ceremony, offering prayers for the enduring peace and stability of the Malian nation.

A multi-faceted discourse

Following the prayer, President Goïta provided a statement to the press, characterizing Mali as a nation under siege from what he termed “multiform terrorism.” He articulated that the pressures exerted upon the country are no longer confined to military engagements but have broadened to include narratives propagated by media outlets, economic leverage, and external political interference. “All determined efforts, particularly through manipulated narratives, will ultimately fail to undermine the Malian people’s unwavering resolve for peace and sovereignty,” he asserted emphatically.

The head of state urged all Malians to rally behind the Malian Armed Forces (FAMA) and their partners, announcing that military operations would persist until the nation achieves “complete pacification.” He further underscored the irreversible nature of the national refoundation project, known as Mali Kura.

One month after GSIM and FLA offensive

This pivotal address comes approximately one month after a coordinated offensive launched by the Support Group for Islam and Muslims (GSIM) and the Azawad Liberation Front (FLA). This joint operation targeted several Malian positions and tragically resulted in the death of Defense Minister Sadio Camara on April 25, 2026. In the aftermath, transitional authorities have intensified their appeals for national cohesion. Concurrently, air and ground operations led by the FAMA and the African Corps continue across the regions of Ségou, Kidal, and Ménaka.
