Mali has undertaken a significant reorganization of its military command structure in the wake of the coordinated attacks on April 25, 2026. These assaults, claimed by both the JNIM and the Front de libération de l’Azawad (FLA), tragically resulted in the death of former Defense Minister, General Sadio Camara, among other casualties.
An extraordinary edition of the Official Journal, published on May 29, detailed the appointments of several high-ranking officers to pivotal positions within the Malian Armed Forces and the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) Unified Force.
Brigadier General Makan Alassane Diarra now assumes leadership of the AES Unified Force. Formerly the Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations, General Diarra succeeds General Daouda Traoré. His extensive experience in military operations across the eastern part of the country was a key factor in this strategic designation.
To fill General Diarra’s previous role at the General Staff of the Armies, authorities have appointed Brigadier General Mamadou Massaoulé Samaké, who previously served as a strategic advisor. Additionally, Colonel-Major Yacouba Sanogo has been assigned the critical post of strategic advisor to the General Staff.
This comprehensive restructuring also extends to operational field commands. Colonel-Major Karim Traoré has been named commander of the Eastern Theater, Colonel-Major Didier Dembélé takes charge of the Southern Theater, and Colonel Issa Bagayoko is now responsible for the Central Theater.
These recent appointments are part of a series of decisive actions implemented following the April incidents. The President of the Transition, General Assimi Goïta, has personally reassumed the Defense portfolio, while General Oumar Diarra has been appointed as Minister Delegate for this crucial sector.
Through this extensive reshuffle, Bamako aims to significantly bolster its response capabilities against an escalating security threat and enhance coordination between national military operations and those conducted under the banner of the AES.
