Ivorian youth urged to embrace work, training, and discipline on independence anniversary

Sixty-six years after Côte d’Ivoire gained its freedom, the nation stands united in remembrance and forward-looking ambition. The Movement of Future Forces, led by Yaya Fofana, delivered a compelling message to the younger generation, emphasizing the values of diligence, education, self-discipline, and rigor as the cornerstones of national progress.

Honoring the legacy of independence

On August 7, 1960, Côte d’Ivoire broke free from colonial rule under the visionary leadership of President Félix Houphouët-Boigny. Decades later, the nation continues to build on this legacy, guided by the ideals of unity, resilience, and shared purpose. The Movement of Future Forces extended heartfelt tributes to the founding leaders, including President Henri Konan Bédié, and recognized the unwavering dedication of the Ivorian Armed Forces, Gendarmerie, Police, and Customs. From political freedom to economic sovereignty

While independence in 1960 granted Côte d’Ivoire political autonomy, the Movement of Future Forces stresses that true sovereignty extends beyond borders. Economic, monetary, agricultural, energy, industrial, digital, and cultural independence are now the urgent priorities. The Movement proposes bold targets: achieving 50% local processing of cocoa and 40% of cashew by 2030, anchored in a robust national industrial strategy. Digital and media sovereignty are equally vital, ensuring that Côte d’Ivoire’s narrative is shaped domestically, not dictated from abroad.

Growth must translate into social justice

Despite impressive macroeconomic performance, the Movement emphasizes that progress must be felt in everyday life. Affordable housing, accessible transportation, quality education, healthcare access, and rising household incomes are the true measures of success. Proposals include building 200,000 affordable homes by 2030, creating 500,000 formal jobs for youth within the next five years, protecting the informal sector—which sustains seven out of ten Ivorians—and establishing a dedicated Ministry for Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs).

The Movement of Future Forces endorses the President’s pledge to foster generational transition, calling for concrete actions such as opening leadership roles to younger, trained professionals, ensuring genuine gender representation in decision-making, and systematically preparing future leaders. A restructured Electoral Commission—operating on a three-way principle involving administration, political parties, and civil society—is proposed to strengthen democratic credibility and ensure peaceful elections.

Reaffirming the spirit of Houphouëtism
