Gaya, Niger: restoring 500 hectares of vital pastoral land

Gaya, June 5, 2026 — The urban commune of Gaya has officially initiated a significant undertaking on Friday, June 5, 2026, focusing on the rehabilitation of 500 hectares of degraded pastoral lands. This crucial initiative, funded by the Integrated Urban Development and Multisectoral Resilience Project (PIDUREM), saw its ceremonial launch across two symbolic locations: one within Gaya itself and another in Tara.

The morning commenced with the Prefect of Gaya presiding over the launch ceremony. He performed the symbolic groundbreaking, marking the official start of operations. Key attendees included the delegated administrator for the commune, the prefecture’s secretary-general, a representative of the canton chief, the regional coordinator for PIDUREM and their team. Also present were the Deputy Regional Director of Environment for Dosso, the departmental director of Environment, representatives from ten partner NGOs, the Tara village chief, and a segment of the local population, underscoring the broad community and official support for this vital project in Niger.
