Several months after the Africa Cup of Nations final where the Sénégal national team defeated Maroc 1-0, FIFA President Gianni Infantino has issued a stern directive to all participating nations. This warning comes as preparations intensify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be held in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Context of the refereeing dispute
The CAN final was marked by a major officiating controversy involving Congolese referee Jean-Jacques Ndella. The official awarded a penalty to Maroc right after Sénégal had a goal disallowed. In protest of these decisions, the Senegalese players, led by coach Pape Thiaw, walked off the pitch for about ten minutes before eventually returning to finish the match.
Despite the disruption, the Lions of Teranga managed to secure the win with a goal from Pape Guèye, allowing Sénégal to claim their second continental trophy.
New sanctions for match abandonment
With the global tournament approaching, Gianni Infantino took the opportunity to remind teams of the strict rules regarding on-field behavior. He stated that any team attempting to walk off the field to protest refereeing decisions at the World Cup will face immediate and severe consequences. “Starting from the World Cup, any team that decides to leave the pitch to protest refereeing will receive red cards and lose the match by forfeit!”
This firm stance is intended to prevent any similar scenes from occurring during the upcoming world championship, ensuring the integrity of the game is maintained.
