The Gabonese development index has been in a state of decline since 2021, according to the National Report on Human Development (RNDH 2026)
The country’s Human Development Index (HDI) has fallen from 0.704 in 2020 to 0.693 in 2021, putting Gabon below the threshold for high human development.
Structural Weaknesses Hinder Human Progress
The report highlights several structural weaknesses that are hindering progress. Despite an improvement in life expectancy, it remains lower than other high-human-development countries due to regional disparities in access to specialized healthcare and the rise of chronic diseases.
The education system also faces challenges, with a low graduation rate for secondary school students, inadequate training programs that don’t match the job market, and high dropout rates.
