Government accelerates debt clearance ahead of independence anniversary
As Gabon prepares to celebrate its 66th Independence Day, the government has announced the release of 51 billion FCFA to settle a portion of outstanding payments owed to local businesses. This initiative aims to bolster small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and revitalize private sector activity across the country.
Sector-specific allocations for economic revival
The financial injection breaks down into two key allocations: 30 billion FCFA will be directed toward mining and forestry enterprises, while 21 billion FCFA will prioritize SMEs and mid-sized companies across other vital sectors.
Private sector engagement drives policy shift
This decision follows extensive consultations between the head of state and representatives from the Fédération des Entreprises du Gabon, alongside leaders of small and mid-sized businesses. The discussions, held at the Palais de la Rénovation in Libreville, focused on the challenges facing the private sector, job preservation, and measures to sustain economic momentum.
Immediate impact on critical industries
The initial phase targets the settlement of 1,478 pending payment orders issued between 2022 and 2026, with a total of 21 billion FCFA earmarked for this purpose. Affected enterprises operate in key economic segments, including construction, maintenance, food supply chains, and fuel distribution.
Strategic debt reduction to boost business confidence
Government officials emphasize that this debt clearance initiative will strengthen company cash flows, sustain operations, and safeguard employment. The move is part of a broader effort to address Gabon’s domestic debt, currently estimated at 4,652 billion FCFA.
By systematically reducing arrears owed to private enterprises, authorities seek to enhance operational conditions and foster a more dynamic business environment. The release of these funds represents a pivotal step in the national strategy to support homegrown businesses and maintain economic stability.
