Burkina Faso: over 1.3 million displaced individuals return as security improves

Under the leadership of Captain Ibrahim Traoré, the Burkinabè government has announced a significant achievement: more than 1.3 million internally displaced persons (IDPs) had successfully returned to their communities of origin by June 30, 2026. This positive trend is a direct result of the progressively improving security situation in various areas that national forces have re-secured across Burkina Faso.

According to official figures, these returns now encompass 1,034 localities, a notable increase from the 871 recorded at the close of 2025. At that point, the number of displaced individuals who had re-established themselves in their former residences stood at an estimated 1.16 million.

These crucial statistics emerged during the semi-annual performance review of the Ministry responsible for Solidarity. Halfway through the 2026 operational year, the ministry has reported an execution rate of 46.06% against its set commitments.

The assessment also highlighted that over 480,000 vulnerable individuals received essential assistance during the first six months of the year. Beneficiaries were provided with vital food aid, basic necessities, and comprehensive support designed to facilitate their long-term recovery and reintegration.

Furthermore, authorities underscored the critical need to accelerate efforts in rehabilitating homes within the affected localities. They believe this measure is fundamental to ensuring the sustained, voluntary return of populations and fostering their durable resettlement under improved conditions.
