After weeks of intense negotiations, Toulouse FC and Sunderland have finalized the deal for young defender Dayann Methalie. The French club has agreed to the Black Cats’ offer, bringing an end to the transfer saga that has dominated the summer transfer window.

Initially hesitant to accept a bid around €33 million for their promising left-back, Toulouse FC has now agreed to a revised offer of approximately €30 million—including potential bonuses. The revised agreement includes a higher fixed fee and structured bonus incentives, making it financially viable for both parties.

Methalie, who has already agreed to a five-year contract with Sunderland, is expected to travel to England today to complete his medical examination before finalizing the move.

A rising star in French football

As reported earlier this summer, Dayann Methalie’s transfer was a top priority for Sunderland, who secured his signature well in advance. The 20-year-old, who has four appearances for the French under-21 national team, enjoyed a standout season with Toulouse FC in Ligue 1.

With a transfer fee of around €30 million, Toulouse FC continues to bolster its finances following the sale of Brazilian midfielder Emerson to Ipswich Town for nearly €32 million. Methalie’s departure marks another significant exit for the Violets, but one that underscores the club’s ability to develop and monetize young talent.

As a reliable left-back and occasional winger, Methalie made 30 appearances across all competitions during the 2025-2026 season, contributing two goals and two assists in Ligue 1. His technical ability and defensive awareness caught the attention of multiple European clubs, but Sunderland’s ambitious project under manager Régis Le Bris ultimately won him over. The English club’s attacking style of play aligns perfectly with Methalie’s strengths, making the move a strategic fit for both player and club.
