Bassirou Diomaye Faye to launch new political party in Senegal

In Senegal, President Bassirou Diomaye Faye is set to establish his own political party, marking a definitive split from his former ally Ousmane Sonko and their shared political movement, Pastef.

Aminata Touré, the president’s senior advisor, has been tasked with assembling a dedicated team to oversee the party’s formation. This move reflects growing political tensions that have intensified over recent months.

Until recently, Bassirou Diomaye Faye was a key figure in Pastef, the ruling party led by Ousmane Sonko, who previously held the position of Prime Minister. However, their partnership dissolved in May following prolonged disagreements, culminating in Faye’s dismissal from his role.

These political shifts unfold against the backdrop of Senegal’s ongoing struggle to address a financial crisis triggered by undisclosed debt from the previous administration. The rift between the two leaders appears irreparable, setting the stage for a high-stakes political rivalry ahead of the 2027 local elections.
