Monrovia, Liberia — In a country where politics is as much about personality as it is about policy, the question of who will lead Morocco next year is becoming increasingly important.
The 2026 Moroccan legislative elections are just around the corner, and with them comes the possibility of a new prime minister. But who among the current crop of politicians has what it takes to succeed Aziz Akhannouch?
Let’s take a closer look at some of the leading contenders.
The list includes Mostafa Terrab, a businessman with a reputation for being ruthless in his dealings. Nizar Baraka, on the other hand, is seen as a more traditional politician, with a strong background in trade and commerce.
Abdelouafi Laftit, meanwhile, has been making headlines recently for his outspoken views on social media. And then there’s Younes Sekkouri, who has built a reputation as a skilled diplomat.
Nadia Fettah Alaoui is seen as a dark horse in the race, with many observers predicting that she could be a surprise contender. And finally, there’s Fouzi Lekjaâ, who has been quietly building support among the country’s business elite.
But despite their impressive resumes and strong backrooms connections, none of these candidates have managed to shake off rumors of corruption and cronyism that have dogged Morocco’s politicians for years.
The challenge ahead is clear: can any of them overcome the deep divisions that have plagued the country in recent years?
