The Economic Community of West African States (CEDEAO) is stepping up efforts to foster fair competition in the digital economy, aiming to secure regional markets against emerging challenges. During a three-day workshop in Banjul, Gambia, from June 15 to 17, the CEDEAO Regional Competition Authority (ARCC) and the EU-funded PACoSPro program joined forces to train public and private stakeholders on navigating the evolving landscape of cross-border trade and digital platforms.
Strengthening regional cooperation for competitive markets
At the opening of the seminar on competition law and policy, ARCC Executive Director Dr. Simeon Koffi emphasized that the rapid pace of economic transformation demands stronger collaboration among competition authorities, governments, media, regional bodies, and international partners. He stressed that only a unified and inclusive strategy can build resilient, equitable, and well-integrated markets that truly benefit West African citizens.
« Our commitment to working closely with national competition agencies, UEMOA, other regional economic communities, the African Competition Forum, and international partners remains unwavering, » Dr. Koffi stated, highlighting the importance of collective action in addressing new anti-competitive practices arising from digital transformation.
Harmonizing regulations to protect consumers and businesses
Mme Mariana Tavares, representing the PACoSPro program, underscored the initiative’s role in supporting regional and national institutions to develop and align regulatory frameworks focused on competition and consumer protection. Funded by the European Union, the program is designed to help authorities implement coherent policies capable of regulating rapidly changing markets.
« Our goal is to ensure that competition rules evolve in step with market realities, enabling fair play for businesses and robust safeguards for consumers, » she explained.
Gambia commits to fair competition and economic growth
Mariama Fofana, Permanent Secretary Adjoint at Gambia’s Ministry of Trade, Industry, Regional Integration, and Employment, reaffirmed the country’s dedication to fostering a level playing field and safeguarding consumer rights. She noted that competition is a powerful catalyst for innovation, productivity, and investment, all of which are vital for sustainable economic development.
« Ensuring a fair competitive environment, protecting consumers, and nurturing the private sector are central to our national agenda, » she said.
Why collaboration is key in a digital-first economy
Participants at the workshop agreed that the complexities of globalization and the digital economy transcend the capacity of any single institution. They emphasized the need for coordinated efforts among national, regional, and international actors to create predictable regulatory mechanisms, enhance market attractiveness for investors, and ensure that consumers reap the full benefits of regional economic integration.
The partnership between ARCC, PACoSPro, and Gambia’s Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (GCCPC) marks a significant milestone for CEDEAO. It reflects the region’s resolve to adopt global best practices in competition law and consumer protection, especially as digital platforms reshape market dynamics.
