Togolese president faure gnassingbé secures release of 22 malian soldiers from fla rebels

Lomé’s diplomatic efforts have once again yielded significant results. Through the adept mediation led by Togo’s President, Faure Gnassingbé, twenty-two Malian military personnel, held captive by Touareg rebels of the Front de libération de l’Azawad (FLA), were successfully released on Sunday, August 23. These soldiers had endured several months of detention in northern Mali.

Prisoner exchange and discreet diplomacy

• The operation: This crucial liberation was reportedly facilitated by an exchange, seeing the simultaneous release of at least eight FLA combatants. The Malian soldiers had been captured at various times, with some taken during recent clashes and others held for over three years.
