Strasbourg stuns Monaco with dramatic Ligue 1 comeback
In a breathtaking turn of events, RC Strasbourg overturned a 4-1 second-half deficit to defeat Monaco 5-4 in a thrilling Ligue 1 clash on Matchday 34.
The eighth-placed side hosted the seventh-placed Monaco, but the visitors dominated early, pressing high and controlling possession. Mike Penders, Strasbourg’s goalkeeper, made crucial saves but struggled with his distribution. His long, accurate pass found Martial Godo, who combined brilliantly with Julio Enciso. Godo’s cross allowed Godo himself to equalize in the 34th minute—a moment of relief for the home side, who had struggled to find rhythm.
Lamine Camara quickly restored Monaco’s lead, capitalizing on a defensive error before Simon Adingra’s pinpoint cross set up Enciso for a clinical finish. The momentum shifted, and Monaco’s defense wobbled. Maghnes Akliouche’s interception allowed Ansu Fati to unleash a thunderous strike from distance, making it 3-2. Christian Mawissa nearly added to the tally before halftime, rounding Hradecky but hitting the woodwork.
A second-half explosion
Monaco’s lead seemed secure, but the tide turned in the second half. Gary O’Neil’s tactical adjustments reinvigorated Strasbourg, while Monaco’s hopes of a top-six finish vanished after Marseille’s win over Rennes. The hosts pressed relentlessly, and Ismaël Doukouré’s unfortunate own goal in the 56th minute handed Strasbourg a lifeline.
Diego Moreira seized the moment, embarking on a mazy run before drilling a shot past Hradecky. Sebastian Nanasi doubled the lead minutes later, capitalizing on a defensive lapse. Monaco fought back, with Nanasi equalizing from close range after Enciso’s header set him up. But Strasbourg’s hunger was insatiable.
The final blow came in the 84th minute. Godo’s cross found Enciso, who unleashed a sublime curling effort from the left flank, sealing a 5-4 victory. The home crowd erupted—a night they would remember for years.
