Ousmane Sonko’s PASTEF will not join Senegal’s next government
Senegal’s opposition leader Ousmane Sonko has made a decisive statement through a social media announcement, clarifying his party’s stance on the formation of the next government.
Senegal’s opposition figurehead Ousmane Sonko has declared that his party, PASTEF-Les Patriotes, will not participate in the upcoming government formation, nor will it be represented by any ministers.
In a decisive statement delivered through his official social media channels, Sonko explained that extensive consultations had taken place between him and the President of the Republic. While some areas of agreement were identified during these discussions, fundamental disagreements remain unresolved, particularly concerning the role and positioning of the majority within the executive framework.
“This morning, a lengthy meeting was held between the President of the Republic and myself,” Sonko stated. “While convergences were confirmed, significant points of disagreement persist, especially regarding the place and role of the majority in the executive structure, the details of which remain unclear.”
He continued, “Consequently, PASTEF-Les Patriotes will not participate in the next government and will not be represented by any minister.”
Official statement from PASTEF’s Executive Committee
In a formal communiqué, the Executive Committee (COMEX) of PASTEF-Les Patriotes outlined the party’s position:
PASTEF-Les Patriotes’ official statement
Acting in accordance with the party’s responsibilities and commitments reaffirmed by President Ousmane Sonko during his installation in the National Assembly, PASTEF-Les Patriotes engaged in multiple exchanges with the President of the Republic to facilitate the formation of the new government.
This morning’s meeting between the President of the Republic and our leader confirmed areas of convergence but also highlighted unresolved disagreements, particularly regarding the role of the majority within the executive structure—details of which remain unspecified.
Following consultations with the party’s governing bodies, new proposals were submitted to the President of the Republic, though no favorable response was received.
Therefore, PASTEF-Les Patriotes will not participate in the next government and will not be represented by any minister.
We will provide further updates in due course and extend our best wishes to the incoming administration.
