Senegal’s ousmane sonko challenges president diomaye on local elections timing

Dakar, Sénégal — Ousmane Sonko, the influential leader of Pastef Les Patriotes and parliamentary majority head, used his recent visit to Louga to voice concerns to President Bassirou Diomaye Faye about the scheduling of upcoming local elections.

During a campaign stop in the northern city as part of his party’s nationwide membership drive, Sonko addressed a packed crowd of militants and supporters. He drew a direct comparison between presidential decrees used for appointments or removals and the one needed to set the date for local elections.

« Issuing a decree to dismiss Fadilou Keïta, Waly Diouf Bodiang, or others falls within his authority — no one disputes that. But the same process must apply when determining the election date. These are all straightforward decrees, » Sonko declared, as the audience erupted in applause.

Growing tensions over election delays

For weeks, Sonko has been vocal against any postponement of the local elections. In Louga, he suggested that the president’s hesitation to set a date may stem from apprehension about his party’s rising momentum.

« There is a fear of the current energy and mobilization among the patriots, » he stated, implying that Bassirou Diomaye Faye might be wary of facing a strengthened opposition in the polls.

The remarks underscore escalating political tensions in Sénégal as the government navigates the complexities of electoral preparation. With public pressure mounting, the debate over election timing has become a focal point of national discourse.
