Senegal: tensions within pastef over unfounded resignation claims
The political landscape in Sénégal has been stirred by fresh controversy as journalist Madiambal Diagne publicly raised the possibility of Ousmane Sonko‘s resignation, prompting an urgent response from Amadou Ba, a key figure in the PASTEF party. The timing of these claims, coinciding with internal party preparations, has intensified scrutiny over potential attempts to manipulate public perception.

PASTEF leadership dismisses resignation speculation
Amadou Ba, Sénégal‘s Minister of Culture and a prominent PASTEF official, took to social media to address the claims, categorically denying any truth to the alleged resignation of Ousmane Sonko. He drew a direct connection between these rumors and the recent circulation of an unsigned resignation letter from a purported PASTEF activist—a document that has already been discredited by multiple party leaders.
Strategic timing of claims raises eyebrows
In his statement, Amadou Ba emphasized that the timing of these claims is not coincidental. He suggested that the orchestrated spread of misinformation could be part of a broader effort to generate grounds for a potential political asylum application. The minister reiterated that the party’s current focus remains squarely on finalizing preparations for its upcoming congress.
Earlier statements from PASTEF officials had already debunked Madiambal Diagne‘s initial claims regarding Sonko‘s resignation. At present, no credible official source from either the Prime Minister’s office or the presidency has validated these assertions.
