Sénégal Politics Takes a New Turn with Bassirou Diomaye Faye’s KIIRAAY Party Launch

The president of Senegal, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, has officially launched his new political party, ‘KIIRAAY – Les Patriotes Républicains’, in Dakar on July 25th. This marks a significant step in the reshuffling of Senegal’s political landscape after his split from the PASTEF party led by his former mentor Ousmane Sonko.

Announced during the party’s constituent assembly held at a hotel in the city centre, KIIRAAY adopts the motto ‘La Patrie d’abord’, asserting an orientation focused on defending national interests, strengthening republican institutions, and consolidating the rule of law.

In Wolof, ‘Kiiraay’ means ‘that which protects’, a choice made by the party’s initiators as a symbol of a political formation destined to accompany the president’s governance project and unite those favourable to his vision of transforming Senegal.

After the assembly, delegates unanimously elected Bassirou Diomaye Faye as the party’s leader, marking a change in his political stance after leaving the PASTEF leadership at the beginning of his presidential term.

The resolution read by Aminata Touré, general supervisor of the former coalition Diomaye Président, states that KIIRAAY was formed from the merger of 437 parties, movements, and associations united around a common project aimed at supporting the reforms undertaken by the president and the country’s development ambitions.

Internationally, the emergence of this new formation is being closely watched by partners, investors, and development actors. In a context where Senegal continues to implement its Vision Sénégal 2050 strategy, institutional stability and governance clarity remain essential factors in reinforcing market confidence, attracting investments, and solidifying international partnerships.

The launch of KIIRAAY opens up a new chapter in Senegal’s political life, which may redefine the balance within the president’s majority as well as the opposition, ahead of upcoming elections, while influencing the framework for future economic and institutional reforms in the country.
