Senegal politics: president’s coalition condemns Ousmane Sonko’s confrontational stance
The presidential coalition portrays Bassirou Diomaye Faye as a model of stability, contrasting his governance with the Assembly President’s divisive rhetoric.
The presidential coalition Diomaye Président has issued a scathing statement today, July 13, 2026, denouncing the inflammatory remarks made by Ousmane Sonko during his recent political rally in Mbacké. The alliance, which backs President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, accused Sonko of deliberately fostering a climate of perpetual confrontation, undermining the nation’s stability.
Tensions between the two political figures have reached a new peak following Sonko’s latest public address. In a meeting held in Mbacké over the weekend, the leader of the Pastef party unleashed a series of sharp criticisms targeting the government, prompting a swift and forceful response from the presidential camp.
The coalition’s communiqué did not mince words. It expressed “profound indignation” at Sonko’s rhetoric, labeling his statements as “scandalous” and a clear departure from the “responsibility expected of any leader.” The document went further, accusing Sonko of launching “crypto-personal attacks” aimed at discrediting President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, behaviors that the coalition argues tarnish the dignity of Senegal’s institutions.
According to the alliance, Sonko’s approach is not only counterproductive but also deliberately disruptive, as it seeks to “plunge citizens into unnecessary turmoil” by clinging to a strategy of “permanent confrontation.”
In stark contrast, the coalition painted President Bassirou Diomaye Faye as a leader committed to “methodical, serene, and open governance,” focused on improving the lives of Senegalese. The statement reaffirmed their unwavering support for the president, vowing to remain mobilized to ensure the success of the country’s “national transformation agenda.”
