Senegal constitutional ruling sparks reaction from National Assembly chief

The President of Senegal’s National Assembly, Ousmane Sonko, has responded to the Constitutional Council’s decision declaring the constitutional reform law passed by lawmakers unconstitutional. The Pastef leader acknowledged the ruling of the Seven Sages, emphasizing that their verdict “must be respected by all.”

In a public statement, Sonko underscored the finality of the decision, asserting, “Regardless of the opinions or interpretations that may arise from the reasoning behind this ruling, one thing is clear: this decision must be respected by all. Case closed.”

The National Assembly chief framed the moment as a testament to Senegal’s institutional strength, noting, “When institutions fulfill their roles within their designated mandates, no crisis can emerge.”

Reaffirming the parliament’s commitment to its duties, Sonko declared, “The National Assembly will continue to exercise its full mandate: laws will be enacted or rejected to honor the commitments made to our resilient and dignified people.”
