While Ratcliffe is open to removing Rashford from the wage bill, he has no intention of strengthening domestic rivals by approving transfers to clubs such as Arsenal, Manchester City, or Liverpool.

These restrictions extend beyond permanent moves, as Ratcliffe has reportedly blocked loan requests from Chelsea, Aston Villa, and Tottenham Hotspur. Within the club’s leadership, concerns persist that Rashford could prove pivotal in aiding a rival in securing a Champions League spot—a scenario deemed “unthinkable” by top executives.

Barcelona’s decision and United’s new signing

During his time on loan at Barcelona last season, Rashford rediscovered his form, contributing 14 goals and 14 assists in 49 appearances. However, the Catalan giants opted not to make the deal permanent, instead splurging £69 million on Newcastle’s Anthony Gordon while letting Rashford’s £26 million purchase option expire. Barcelona manager Hansi Flick later ruled out a return for the English striker, citing financial and squad complications.

Flick praised Rashford highly, stating: “We don’t know what happens with loaned players, and our situation isn’t straightforward. But I’ve enjoyed working with him. He’s a fantastic player and an even better person. The team misses him, and I will too, but that’s life—we have to accept it.”

Contract impasse and Rashford’s next steps

After the international break, Rashford rejoined Manchester United’s squad for pre-season, including a match against Leeds United. However, his inclusion appears temporary. The striker is set to hold decisive talks with interim manager Michael Carrick following the upcoming friendly against AC Milan in Poland, with a clear preference to move on from Old Trafford to revive his career elsewhere.

The situation is further complicated by Rashford’s contract, which runs until 2028. He could remain at the club for the next two years before leaving on a free transfer—a move that would represent a significant financial loss for Manchester United.
